Spider-man 3 Marvel Minimates 5 Pack: REALLY cool, sort of... It was in 2003 that I walked into my local comic book store. My weekly ritual was abruptly interrupted when I noticed a tiny Green Goblin holding a highly detailed Pumkinbomb. He was packaged with this kind of bizarre half Peter Parker half Spider-man figure. My curiosity peeked; I bought the set, ripped it open and could not put them down. They were perfect pocket sized action figures! I could pose them in everyway imaginable and it was not long before I was carrying at least 8 in my pocket for emergency playtimes lol. It was that little Green Goblin that led me into miniature toy collecting and eventually inspired me to build Riapet Exclusives! Thank you Art Asylum!
It has been four years and here I am ripping open my Spidey 3 minimates set!
I want to give this set a great review, but I am getting disheartened with some of what I am seeing...
Marvel Minimates Spider-man 3 5pack consists of the following characters:
Torment Spider-Man Powerhouse Venom Powerhouse Sandman Melee Symbiote Spider-man BONUS: Hydroman
In my opinion, Sandman is the best figure in the set. He sports the classic Art Asylum surprises that I love about mini-mates. At first he looked like a pumped up William Baker in the package, but put him up to the light and you will see the detailed semi-translucence in his legs and hands. When you remove his headpiece, you will find a translucent Sandman head! Very cool eye candy! He comes with 2 translucent mega sized sandy extensions to replace his hands with. He is great for pictures but not so great for playing :( The mass of the extensions throws off the figures balance to the point that his arms fall off and repeated posing will wear the joints down very quickly. I recommend getting your pictures in within the first hour of playtime. The bulk that Art Asylum has added reminds me of Starbricks (see Brick Wars) in that the figure's articulation is greatly reduced at the shoulder joints and the arms fall off easily. Artistically this figure gets a 10! Playability score 4.
Torment Spider-man and Melee Symbiote Spider-man are on par for what minimates collectors expect. The paint jobs are well done, representing the movie characters. Spider-man has some added depth with muscle highlights creating a subtle sheen to the figure. He looks like what one would expect from an Ultimate spidey
HydroMan is what made me become nostalgic but not for the greatest reason! lol Jean Grey's hair is back from Minimates series 3 and it looks worse. Hydroman is an excellent minimate, translucent blue forearms and hands, with water attachments that do not require hand removal. His extensions work much better for playability than Sandman's and do not compromise the joints during poses etc. But the hairpiece? Why, just why?! Mold lines are clearly visible and unfortunately, sloppy.
Powerhouse Venom has the same shoulder articulation challenge as Sandman which means his arms will not go higher than his shoulders and will more than likely fall off during play. However, sculpt wise Art Asylum put some good effort into his hands by making individual fingers instead of painting in depth using the round hands. Nice! The paint work is very noteworthy in that they strove to make these figs look exactly like the movie characters. Powerhouse Venom really slams this goal home! He exudes the Spidey 3 Venom's personality. It is as if you immediately transform the figure in your mind's eye to the evil smile of the movie's Venom. Very trippy and very cool!
I really like and dislike this set. In fact, it is ironic that I should have the same type of duality in feeling that the Spider-man 3 movie represents! Grab the set, see for yourself :)
