Spider-man 3 Marvel Minimates 5 Pack: REALLY cool, sort of...
It was in 2003 that I walked into my local comic book store. My weekly ritual was abruptly interrupted when I noticed a tiny Green Goblin holding a highly detailed Pumkinbomb. He was packaged with this kind of bizarre half Peter Parker half Spider-man figure. My curiosity peeked; I bought the set, ripped it open and could not put them down. They were perfect pocket sized action figures! I could pose them in everyway imaginable and it was not long before I was carrying at least 8 in my pocket for emergency playtimes lol. It was that little Green Goblin that led me into miniature toy collecting and eventually inspired me to build Riapet Exclusives! Thank you Art Asylum!
It has been four years and here I am ripping open my Spidey 3 minimates set!
I want to give this set a great review, but I am getting disheartened with some of what I am seeing...
Marvel Minimates Spider-man 3 5pack consists of the following characters:
Torment Spider-Man Powerhouse Venom Powerhouse Sandman Melee Symbiote Spider-man BONUS: Hydroman
In my opinion, Sandman is the best figure in the set. He sports the classic Art Asylum surprises that I love about mini-mates. At first he looked like a pumped up William Baker in the package, but put him up to the light and you will see the detailed semi-translucence in his legs and hands. When you remove his headpiece, you will find a translucent Sandman head! Very cool eye candy! He comes with 2 translucent mega sized sandy extensions to replace his hands with. He is great for pictures but not so great for playing :( The mass of the extensions throws off the figures balance to the point that his arms fall off and repeated posing will wear the joints down very quickly. I recommend getting your pictures in within the first hour of playtime. The bulk that Art Asylum has added reminds me of Starbricks (see Brick Wars) in that the figure's articulation is greatly reduced at the shoulder joints and the arms fall off easily. Artistically this figure gets a 10! Playability score 4.
Torment Spider-man and Melee Symbiote Spider-man are on par for what minimates collectors expect. The paint jobs are well done, representing the movie characters. Spider-man has some added depth with muscle highlights creating a subtle sheen to the figure. He looks like what one would expect from an Ultimate spidey
HydroMan is what made me become nostalgic but not for the greatest reason! lol Jean Grey's hair is back from Minimates series 3 and it looks worse. Hydroman is an excellent minimate, translucent blue forearms and hands, with water attachments that do not require hand removal. His extensions work much better for playability than Sandman's and do not compromise the joints during poses etc. But the hairpiece? Why, just why?! Mold lines are clearly visible and unfortunately, sloppy.
Powerhouse Venom has the same shoulder articulation challenge as Sandman which means his arms will not go higher than his shoulders and will more than likely fall off during play. However, sculpt wise Art Asylum put some good effort into his hands by making individual fingers instead of painting in depth using the round hands. Nice! The paint work is very noteworthy in that they strove to make these figs look exactly like the movie characters. Powerhouse Venom really slams this goal home! He exudes the Spidey 3 Venom's personality. It is as if you immediately transform the figure in your mind's eye to the evil smile of the movie's Venom. Very trippy and very cool!
I really like and dislike this set. In fact, it is ironic that I should have the same type of duality in feeling that the Spider-man 3 movie represents! Grab the set, see for yourself :)

NYC Comics Convention 2007
This was our first year attending the NYC Comics Convention and will not be the last! Unlike the International Toyfair, it is open to the public which makes it even more fun!
There were Artist signings everywhere including Sket One working his tail off to sign custom Qees.
Stan Lee had auditions for upcoming super hero roles, there were live Star Wars special effects shows, every possible comic you can imagine with special signings and exclusive Movie previews! The place was hopping filled with fans from all genres.
We had the opportunity to meet the creator of Drain C.B. Cebulski who gave us all the time needed to learn more about this great comic series! We walked away with a hot off the press, signed, 1st print of Drain 1, with an incredible special edition cover from graphic artist Takeda.
Dark Horse, DC, Art Asylum,Sideshow,Mezco,Grafitti Designs,Sony Playstation and McFarlane were all there in full form.
Nothing could prepare us for this show! lol Whether it was talking to fans and fellow retailers, or catching the private screening of Fantastic Four, we were floored.
The last day was a trip! I would recommend that if you are heading to the Convention, try to make it to the last day. Countdown to the convention closing bell was a massive freebie giveaway! Almost every area had people swarming for free convention exclusives. We had to work for some of them! Prizes going to the correct answers of some pretty tough Comics character and storyline questions. We walked away with bags upon bags of awesome stuff and won a PS2 Ghost Rider video game. WE were like kids in a candy store grinning all the way home! Cya next year NYC Comic Con! | | | | Sizzlin' Hot! |

New Year, New Toys, New Services, oh boy!
Wow, what a great start to the New Year! We want to thank all of our customers who chose Riapet Exclusives for their holiday shopping : ) We are still cleaning up the store, lol. Due to the incredible positive response to our holiday price chops, we are going to keep our sale prices!
There are several projects that we are working on at this time including a signature gallery for online gaming forums. We will be offering graphics services for our second passion, video gaming! Our graphics area is still in its infancy, however, we have had the distinct pleasure of working on site banners and forum sigs for several gaming sites.
We are considering making a site forum to discuss and comment on upcoming collectable series. With the NYC ToyFair just around the corner, we are getting many requests for products that will be offered for the New year. DC mini-mates have been delayed but will still be released. We will be sure to re-order the series for our collections and of course, our customers! We are hoping to meet up with Medicom in NYC this year, but their attendance is not confirmed yet, we are crossing our fingers. A trip to the Toyfair would not be complete without visiting our friends at KidRobot to grab the new Dunnys and Munnys!
Toy2R will be attending the NY Comics Convention and we will make every effort to meet up with Raymond for their latest Qee series!
Our comics project is huge as it requires individual grading of every comic we have in stock. We want to make the best condition assessment to ensure that customers are confident with their comic s grade as they are now, with our toys. It is not a project that can be rushed and we thank you for patience as we take the time needed to provide accurate grading.
That s the skinny at this time, we will be sure to keep you up to date as we progress!

Video Gaming and Toys; A perfect match!
| | | After finally defeating The Boss in Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake-eater, Konami releases a Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence video game! I traded my MGS3 for the new one only to find out once more I was a step behind. For a short time, they offered a Limited Edition version MGS3 Subsistence for Playstation 2 and it is impossible to find! One thing is for certain, when MGS 4 comes out, I am going to wait just in case! Lol what does this have to do with toys?
Well, check out this 12 inch Snake from Medicom. Snake comes with the following. 2 right gloves and 3 left gloves. Jungle boots, square camouflage suits with belt, pouch, gun holder. Stabo harness, custom gun, and figure stand. Limited edition to Wonder Festival Winter 2005. Limited to 500 pieces, 150 for Winter Wonder Festival. Let us know if you are interested in grabbing this while he is still available. He is being sold for $150.00 at this time, but it is anticipated to increase as the Holidays draw near. Not to mention the likelihood that he will harder to find by then, just like my Limited Edition MGS3 video game! lol
Metal Gear Solid is no stranger to the collectible toys arena. Snake has been produced in limited edition carded Kubricks for some time now along with other characters from video games. Thanks to RockStar, Kubrick collectors raced to grab the Grand Theft Auto III boxed set and no sooner than we yelled "more, more", Medicom and Rockstar pop out Grand Theft Auto Vice City Kubricks. We predict that a San Andreas boxed set is not too far behind and would look sweeeet on our PS2 console (even sweeter on a PS3!).
The melding between video game icons and collectible toys is a match like no other. What better way to keep your game on with a Snake, Tommy Verceti and hopefully CJ near by! Thanks to Medicom and similar manufacturers, games live on even after you turn the console off!

Bearbrick Series 12 is the worst series yet...
Worse for those who thought Bearbricks were a dying breed! Worse for recovering Bearbrick collectors who will be abruptly kicked off the wagon! The worst for those who thought it was safe to window-shop! And by far the worst for those who thought their Estate Bearbricks were the last multi-colored Bearbricks to be found. They have it bad, and there will be infighting in your collections! Lol Just look at this line-up of Chase figures, Medicom shows no mercy ; )

Be@rbrick Series 12 offers Horrific Fun Bearbrick series 12 packs a collectible Punch! 1 word...SAW, 2nd word Alien! We have not seen Horror movie Bearbricks since Series 3's Jason. Now we will have both Saw and H.R. Giger's Alien style Bearbrick. For Pattern collectors, feast your eyes on Maharishi X Andy Warhol DPM identifier. Basic is the best to date, straying from the usual primary colors, series 12's Basic looks like milk chocolate! Jellybean is crystal clear and the artists and chase figures top this series off in a way that we have not seen for some time. There is a Bearbrick for everyone in series 12. Great work Medicom!

Paper or Plastic, or Both?
| | | As we were writing descriptions for our Minimates and Kubricks, it dawned on us that something was missing in our collectible toy site, history. You see, whether you are purchasing a Super Hero Hellboy Ci-Boy, a Spider-Ham Kubrick or a Punisher Minimate, you also have a piece of Comic Book History in your possession. Rarely do we see descriptions that give credit to Stan Lee for example, for creating the characters of Spider-Man, The X-Men and a multitude of characters in the Marvel Universe. When shopping around for a Batman Minimate, it is unlikely that you will see Bob Kane's name in the write-up and even rarer, writer Bill Finger.
We decided that the best way for us to pay tribute to these artists and writers is to offer the original comics from the 1940s and beyond. Customers of Riapet Exclusives will now be able to collect a Punisher Kubrick in addition to The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (the first appearance of The Punisher). Our goal is to offer comics released prior to 1970. We will stock several comics post 1970 so that a collector who wants the Hellboy Qees can also grab John Byrnes Next Men #21(1993, the first appearance of Hellboy). Unlike our toy inventory, the comics will not be re-stocked, it will be a first come/first served. Comic book collectors are well aware that the preservation of original comic books lies solely in the protection of these masterpieces by their owners. Nuff said ; )

Summer 2006 : The Long Awaited DC Invasion
| | | Collectors get ready for a DC summer! Whether you collect Minimates from Art Asylum or Kubricks and Bearbricks from Medicom Toy Japan, you are in for a treat. DC entered the miniature collectible market with Batman Kubrick Series 1, 2 DC Exclusive Batman Kubrick boxed sets, a 400% Batman Kubrick, Carded Batman Movie/Animated releases and the C3 Minimates series. While the C3 Minimates series was short lived, collectors had the opportunity of grabbing Superman, Batman, Joker, Robin, and Catwoman minimates. For Kubrick collectors, it has been slim pickin's. Batman Kubricks have been favorite finds, however, most of the DC Universe has not been represented. Finally, Kubrick collectors will be able to have a Superman Kubrick and Bearbrick! Hopefully, Medicom will continue the DC series! Dibs on a Wonder Woman and Aquaman Kubrick...and a Two-Face Kubrick...and a Riddler Kubrick and... ; ) Art Asylum has it covered, here are the line-ups:
DC Minimates wave 1
Green Lantern and Star Sapphire, Classic Superman and Armored Lex Luthor, Joker and Harley Quinn, Modern Batman and OMAC
DC Minimates wave 2
Power Girl and Dr. Fate, Battle-Damaged Superman and Brainiac 13, Robin and Penguin, Booster Gold and Blue Beetle
DC Minimates wave 3
Deathstroke and Green Arrow, Battle-Damaged Batman and Killer Croc, Aquaman and Ocean Master, Wonder Woman and Ares.

A Qee Reflection
| | | We just received signed Qees from OX-OP series 2. We hope to get the second OX-OP series soon and a few 5Cs. Toy2R has made their mark in the Collectibles market! We began our collections with the OX-OP series and Qee Designer Series 4. Both of which are our favorites to this day.
While working on our Qee area, I found myself becoming nostalgic. I remembered the first time we saw Qees. We were in a store in New York and the OX-OP series was sitting by the checkout. Black, red and white boxes with a black card inserted to conceal the Qee's identity. We grabbed a bunch and later that night, we grabbed a cab, to clear the store's counter! We were hooked!
What is it about Blind Assortment? Is it the intermittent reinforcement, similar to Scratch cards, but considerably more satisfying? It is difficult to own just 1 of a particular Qee, naturally a collector wants one on their keychain, one on display and a few others...just in case.
Qee Designer series 4 offered the most "Bells and whistles" with an artist button, stand and card. The cases were packed with 24 blind boxes. There was a good chance for collectors to find that one variant they had been crossing their fingers for. With artists such as Mad Barbarians, Jo Lo, Tado, Wood, Steven Lee, Toygodd, Acid, and Touma, Qee collectors were satiated, for at least a couple of months! Then Boom, The UK Exclusive Designer Qee series 4, filled with variants galore of the previous series with a new pudgy addition, The Egg Qee.
There have been numerous series released since our first OX-OP discovery. Yet, even today, I still say...
More Qees Please!

Brick Wars Part 2 Exhibit: Darth Vader
| | | Now that we have C3PO, Darth Vader, the Emperor and Yoda Kubricks, we can put them side by side with their Starbrick counterparts.
Here is a picture of the Vaders. The set was advertised as Star Wars Return of the Jedi Kubrick set. Today, the Fakes are advertised as "Early Bird" sets to draw in the collectors looking for authentic Medicom Early Bird sets.
If you look at the picture prior to expanding it, you can see where one might think this is a Kubrick. The expanded picture shows the numerous differences in detail and quality. Darth Vader has a few scars painted on his skull and expression lines on his face. The helmet is very well done, and offers the most detailed features of any Starbrick we have seen thus far.
The Darth Starbrick is displayable as long as you are only posing him. None of the Starbricks have the durability to play with. C3PO's arms broke off doing basic movements. Darth, and any Starbrick with an additional layer, fall apart very easily. We recommend setting up one pose, with super glue handy, and leaving the figure alone after that.
(Posted 5/9/2006 by exclusivz) |
Brick War Part 2 Exhibit: The Emperor The Emperor Starbrick is a merely a shadow of our Emperor Kubrick. Once again the makers of Starbricks miss classic details and accessories. While our Kubrick has stunning bolts of electricity, the Emperor Starbrick has...a walking stick. Though the Emperor used a walking stick as part of his guise, the pattern of "Brick with primary weapon" was completey overlooked.
(Posted 5/9/2006 by exclusivz) |
Brick Wars Part 2 Exhibit: C3P0
| | | | C3PO and his annoying cousin? | To Starbricks credit, they have put in some effort in their mold making, though at the expense of everything else. C3PO wins the award for "most likely to break". It appears that in the process of creating some detail for 3PO's arms, they neglected to follow through with the joints. The Starbrick is very rigid. It seems as though they painted him after assembly causing a significant restraint in its movement. If you are a collector who wants the fakes, 3PO needs the most care when posing.
(Posted 5/9/2006 by exclusivz) |
Brick Wars Part 2 Exhibit: Yoda
| | | | Yoda and his wife? | Wow, what can we say about these 2? Where do we begin? How about we simply say, to the left is an incredible Medicom Yoda Kubrick, and to the right, a figure wearing a Yoda costume for Halloween.
Joking aside, Starbricks have created a second market filled with collectors who want the fakes in addition to their Kubrick counterparts. We have a set of Starbricks that were sold in the mainstream market at one point, the Terminator 2 set in collectable tin. We will put them side by side with our Terminator Kubricks in our final entry of the Brick Wars.
(Posted 5/9/2006 by exclusivz) |
Brick Wars Exhibit #1
| | | | Obi Wan and Jedi Luke and Starbrick Leia | Collectors can become quite frustrated with Retailers that advertise Kubricks but actually send Kubrick mutations. The catchphrase for these perps is "StarBricks". When we first started collecting Kubricks, we fell for it. Wanting the Darth Vader "Kubrick" many years ago, we were stoked to grab a set. It is difficult to describe how foolish we felt when we received the posers. They are still advertised as Kubricks, even today! We thought it would be helpful to show them side by side to assist new and even savvy collectors who are looking at questionable Kubs to purchase.
(Posted 5/3/2006 by exclusivz) |
Brick Wars Exhibit #2
| | | | Obi Wan and Luke's Light Sabers | When we talk about mold lines, we are referring to the raised outlines from 2 molds being pushed together. We look for figures that have smooth lines. It is hard to create these collectibles without some lines, but as you can see with the light-saber picture comparisons, StarBricks are more frequently pronounced. Also note the pock marks on the saber's handles in the StarBricks. If you are not sure which is which, the StarBrick light sabers look like Lite-Brite colored peg replacements. The headpiece differences are remarkable and highly distinguishable
(Posted 5/3/2006 by exclusivz) |
Brick Wars Exhibit # 3
| | | | Front view of Obi Wan and Jedi Luke Kubricks and Starbrick versions | It is grossly apparent that the details and sculpts from Medicom cannot be replicated easily. If they could, then the creators of StarBricks would invest that time and energy into creating their own figure line if you think about it.
The paints are like night and day. StarBricks do not have the sophisticated expressions or relevant features for each character. The differences between the paint jobs need no further explanation.
One of the most cherished Medicom talents is the ability to create depth and dimension with little deviation from the original Kubrick mold. Medicom has taken this even further with the Star Wars series and chase figures throughout numerous series and boxed sets. This is where artistry meets manufacturing. Most, given the correct tools, can make a Brick figure. What sets Medicom, far apart from the mass production of miniature collectibles, are the company artists that commit their time, effort, and talent to reproduce some of the most memorable characters and scenes from a vast source of mediums.

Brick Wars Exhibit #4
| | | | Back views of Obi Wan and Luke Kubricks and Starbrick versions | So what can a collector do should they come across a possible fake?
1. Ask the seller for a close-up of the figure that you are interested in. If an item is shown out of bag, ask for a picture of the actual item that you will be receiving.
2. Asking for authenticity is a closed-ended question; the seller will most likely tell you "yes" and leave it at that. Ask for a pic that includes the holographic Medicom sticker/logo. If it is an older series, ask for a scan of the back of the box that displays copy-write information.
3. If a store is selling Kubricks, then there should be a reference to Medicom whether in the item description or elsewhere on the site.
4. Follow steps 1-3 :) For many, Kubricks and other miniature collectibles are treasures, investments, toys, 3 dimensional art pieces etc. what ever your motivation is to collect, be sure to ask the seller and fellow collectors about the piece you are looking to purchase if you have any doubts about its origin.
We hope this was helpful : )

Headphone Babies Tokyoguns is described as the icon for anti-fashion. Works include Club Flyers, the creation of the character "b", and other numerous media in Japan. Known today as a popular new age illustrator and designer, Tokyoguns applies his black humor to his creations.
This 3 inch Headphone Baby is an eye catcher. The dichotomous expression immediately grabbed our attention. He is anatomically correct, sports tatts on his back and arms, and comes in 3 different colors: blue, nude, and black. Each has a stand, a keychain accessory and are packaged on card. The soft vinyl is impressively sculpted with very few mold lines. In hand, this little guy feels solid!
The red version (shown to the right), was a Summer Sonic Limited edition released in 2005. The production run was 777 and are sold out. The hunt begins ; )
In the meantime, we are planning to add a few of the Black versions to our inventory while we search for our Red Headphone Baby!
